What is Effexor: EFFEXOR
XR is believed to treat depression and anxiety disorders by
affecting the levels of 2 naturally occurring chemicals in
the brain — serotonin and norepinephrine. Because EFFEXOR XR
works on these two chemicals, it is known as an SNRI, or
serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. EFFEXOR XR may
help resolve the broad range of symptoms of depression.
Resolving these symptoms may be the first step to helping
you feel like yourself again. And EFFEXOR XR helps keep
symptoms from coming back.
Taking Effexor: Take Effexor with food, exactly as
prescribed. It may take several weeks before you begin to
feel better. Your doctor should check your progress
periodically. Take Effexor XR once at the same time each
day. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not divide,
crush, or chew it.
Possible Side Effects of Effexor: You may experience
serious side effects with Effexor XR. Seek emergency medical
care if you have an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing;
closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or
face; or hives); seizures; or an irregular heartbeat or
severely high blood pressure (blurred vision, headache).
Some less severe side effects may also occur, such as
drowsiness or dizziness; nausea, vomiting, upset stomach,
abdominal pain, or loss of appetite or weight; mild tremor,
anxiety, or agitation; headache or insomnia. Check with your
doctor if any of them are especially bothersome. You may
experience side effects not listed here.
Effexor Precautions and Warnings: If you have taken a
monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as phenelzine (Nardil),
isocarboxazid (Marplan), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) any
time in the previous two weeks, you can not take Effexor XR.
Your doctor should know if you have a history of heart
disease, high blood pressure, seizures or epilepsy, or liver
or kidney disease. If you are pregnant or nursing, do not
use this medication without talking to your doctor.

caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal
drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check
with your health care professional before stopping or
starting any of your medicines.
Missed Effexor Dose: If you take several doses per
day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and
take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced
intervals. However, if it is almost time for the next dose,
skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing
schedule. If you take venlafaxine once a day at bedtime and
do not remember to take it until the next morning, skip the
